The Best Cocktail Bars in Vientiane

Six bars where the drinks are made properly, chosen by people who make drinks for a living and live here. Where each one is, what it is like, and the one thing to order. Checked in October 2026.

Vientiane is a small capital with a short list of bars worth crossing town for, and the short list is the point. Ask around and you will hear the same five or six names from bartenders, hotel concierges and the expats who have been here long enough to stop going to the river bars. This is that list.

What it is not: a list of every place with a cocktail menu. The riverfront has a dozen bars where the view is the drink and the drink is the view, and the rooftops have more. None of them are here. A bar is on this list because someone behind the counter cares how the ice is cut and what rum is in the glass, and because we went, paid, and would go back.

How we judged

Three things, in this order. The drinks, measured against the classics and against what the bar claims to be doing. The room, which should make you want to stay for a second and not shout for it. And the welcome, because in a city this size the person behind the bar is the bar. We have ranked them, but the first three are interchangeable depending on the night and your mood. Every bar here was open and pouring in October 2026; hours change, so check before you go.

1. 525 Cocktail Bar

8 Watchan Village, near the river · from 5 pm, daily

525 has been the city's reliable cocktail bar since 2015, first in a colonial villa and, since this spring, in a new home in Watchan, a few streets back from the Mekong. If you knew the old place, the new one is comfortably familiar: a modern bar, a quiet garden, air-conditioning that works, and the same staff, who are also part-owners, which explains a great deal about how you are treated.

Andrew Sykes, who runs it, says it was never about having "the best" cocktails but about making people feel welcome, and that is honest: the list is classics done properly, with a few house inventions that stay with you. The Marmalade is the one we go back for, bitter orange in a glass with none of the sweetness you expect from the name. The spicy margarita is the crowd favourite, and a gin and tonic on a locally made gin is the right drink for the garden at six. Small plates are good enough to make it dinner.

Order: The Marmalade, and the three-chilli broccoli to go with it.

2. Madame Cocktail Bar

Eighth floor of the Lao Poet building, Rue Pangkham · 6 pm to 1 am, daily

Madame sits on the eighth floor of the Lao Poet, but it is not the hotel's bar. It is the second Vientiane bar from Andrew Sykes and the 525 team, and it is the secret one: no sign to speak of, a lift ride, and a door into a 1930s Indochine room of velvet, burgundy, deep green and brass, the kind of place where you lower your voice without being asked.

Where 525 does the classics, Madame does the experiments. The list leans on clarified drinks, cocktails run through milk or filtered until they pour crystal clear, with all the flavour and none of the cloud, and the bartenders will talk you through them if you ask. If 525 is the bar for the cocktail you know, this is the bar for the one you do not.

Order: Whichever clarified drink is new that week, then their Old Fashioned to finish.

3. Artisan Bar

Sakarin Road, by the Sacred Heart Cathedral · 7 pm to midnight, closed Mondays

Dim, grown-up and quiet, Artisan is the bar for a conversation that matters. Premium spirits, a proper back bar, leather you sink into, and a cigar lounge with its own room if that is your thing. It has a sister in Luang Prabang, and the same seriousness runs through both.

The drinks lean rich: the Artisan Creamy is a dessert in a coupe, and the Wild Honey and Pandan is the one to order if you want to taste something that could only have been made in Laos. Couples like it. So do people closing a deal.

Order: Wild Honey and Pandan, and a cigar if you have the evening.

4. Gallery 38

Rue Manthatourath, upstairs · 6:30 pm to 1 am, to 2 am Friday to Sunday

On the ground floor there is a café and a bottle shop. Through the heavy wooden door at the back and up the stairs there is a room that could be in Hanoi or Lisbon: oil paintings on every wall, jazz at the right volume, and a bar team who treat a cocktail list like a menu rather than a dare.

The house gin, Gin 38, is the thing to understand first: rose, lemon, floral, light. The Mist of Lan Xang puts Lao gin with sparkling wine and Kyoho grape; the Jeaw Bong G&T infuses the gin with lemongrass and kaffir lime, which sounds like a gimmick and is not. You are welcomed with a small drink and a snack, which tells you how the place thinks about hospitality.

Order: The Jeaw Bong G&T, or the Lotus Breeze if you are not drinking. Both taste of here.

5. Sona Café and Bar

Lane Xang Avenue · 7 am to 12:30 am, daily

Sona belongs to the same people as Gallery 38 and Gin 38, and it is the daytime face of the family: a café from seven in the morning that turns into a bar after dark without closing in between. The room is sixties mid-century lines lit with seventies disco colour, which should not work and does.

Two drinks lists, one for day and one for night. By day the Dark Forest, a tea-tail of green tea, jasmine, aloe vera and pandan with a lychee on top, is the best non-alcoholic drink in Vientiane. By night the Plum Old Fashioned (bourbon, green Chartreuse, red plum, orange bitters) and the Lip of Geisha (gin, sencha, aloe, pandan) are the ones to order. The late-night Lao crostini, pork liver mousse with pickled chilli, is the right thing at midnight.

Order: A Plum Old Fashioned, late, with the crostini.

6. Cocoon Bar

Rue Hengbounnoy, Chanthabouly · 7 pm to 1 am, daily

Down a quiet alley off Hengbounnoy, behind a door you will walk past the first time, is the smallest serious bar in the country. Fifteen people is a full house. The idea is Prohibition, done with a light touch: low light, a short bar, a bartender who looks up when you come in. The music is hip hop at a conversational volume, which is rarer than it sounds.

What earns Cocoon its place is the drinks. They are built on Lao ingredients rather than imported syrups, and they are original without being silly. The one everybody talks about is Nevertheless, a fruit-led drink finished with a mangosteen foam, and it is as good as the talk. Prices are Vientiane prices. Go on a weeknight; on a Saturday you may be standing.

Order: Nevertheless, then whatever the bartender suggests second. They are usually right.

And one that opens in December

We are building the first tiki bar in Laos. Swizzle opens on 1 December 2026 near Pha That Luang, inside Noy's Fruit Heaven, with the tiki canon built to the original specifications, the Zombie limited to two, house falernum and orgeat made from Lao fruit, and a food menu from the fire. It belongs on this list only once strangers say so, which is why it is down here rather than up there. Come in December and tell us.

A night out, in order

Start at Sona or 525 while it is still light, for a long drink in a garden or a tea-tail if you are pacing yourself. Walk to Gallery 38 for the gin, then down the alley to Cocoon for the drink you will talk about tomorrow. If you are still standing, Madame, eight floors up in the Lao Poet building, closes the night in velvet. Artisan is for another evening, with someone you want to talk to. And from December, finish at ours.
